Lincoln City are weighing up a move for Shamrock Rovers defender Josh Honohan as the transfer window enters its final stages.
The 24-year-old has attracted attention across the EFL after strong performances in domestic and European competition, with Stoke City and Wigan Athletic also linked with the versatile Irishman.
Imps Step Up Defensive Search
Honohan, a Cork native, only joined Shamrock Rovers last year but has quickly established himself as a key figure in their defence. Comfortable across the back line, he has featured at centre-half, full-back and wing-back, a flexibility that appeals to clubs looking to strengthen ahead of the deadline. His rise has coincided with Shamrock Rovers’ European campaign, where he played a prominent role in their progression through the UEFA Europa Conference League qualifiers.
Most recently, Honohan impressed in the Irish side’s 2-1 away victory against Portuguese outfit Santa Clara, underlining his ability to compete at a high level. Those displays did not go unnoticed by Republic of Ireland head coach Heimir Hallgrímsson, who called him into the senior squad for June’s international friendlies, although he has yet to make his debut.
Reports from Ireland suggest Lincoln are prepared to pay in the region of £350,000 for his services. That figure would represent a significant outlay for the League One club, who are managed by Michael Skubala, but it underlines their determination to strengthen the squad after already adding midfielder Ivan Varfolomeev earlier this month.

Versatility and Reliability
Honohan’s reputation has been built on his consistency as much as his adaptability. Data from his time at Shamrock Rovers highlights his efficiency in possession, averaging close to 28 passes per game at an 80% success rate, with standout matches such as a win over Waterford seeing him reach nearly 90% accuracy. Defensively, he is robust in duels, winning almost 60% on the ground and over half in the air, while contributing close to four interceptions per game.
His recovery numbers are equally eye-catching, with nearly seven per match in the opposition half, reflecting his aggressive approach to regaining possession. That commitment is matched by his durability, regularly playing 90 minutes whether in league fixtures or on the European stage. He has also chipped in with goals, scoring three this season, including one in Europe, while showing an ability to create chances with assists from wide areas.
Writer’s View
Honohan fits the mould of player Lincoln City have targeted under Skubala: young, versatile, with scope to grow in value. His statistical output across multiple defensive positions shows why he has drawn admiring glances, while his international call-up indicates recognition beyond Ireland’s domestic league.
The reported fee would represent a sizeable investment, but with defensive reinforcements required, it could be a calculated risk worth taking. Securing Honohan would not only add depth and flexibility but also send a message of intent as Lincoln look to strengthen before the deadline.
