Points Over Performances: Luton Town Boss Happy With Start

Luton Town manager Matt Bloomfield insists points a more important than performances at this stage of the season.

The Hatters have endured a tough couple of years. After their astronomical rise to the Premier League was completed in 2023, they have since suffered back-to-back relegations to drop down to League One.

Bloomfield left Wycombe Wanderers to replace Rob Edwards in January but despite much improved showings on the pitch, he was unable to halt the slide to the third tier. This has led to a number of changes within the playing squad, with no fewer than 10 players arriving, whilst the exits are also in the double digits.

Luton entertain fellow relegated outfit Cardiff City in today’s lunchtime kick off on a run of three league wins from four. They needed a late own goal to beat AFC Wimbledon on the opening day, whilst they have also edged past Peterborough United and Wigan Athletic. The only blemish on their record thus far is a shock 2-1 defeat against Bradford City.

Bloomfield Addresses Below Par Performances

The Bedfordshire-based side haven’t been easy on the eye but will begin today in sixth position. Addressing his team’s showings on the pitch, Bloomfield insists that the most important thing at this stage is to pick up points:

“I think it’s (victories) crucial as its been a tough couple of seasons.

“We had to try and pick up some results early in the season to build confidence and start to build some belief. I know there are still some question marks about the performances, I’ve been told all about that and that’s fine, no problem.

“It’s up to us to keep going after the work. We have to be very single-minded in the way that we want to work, we have to keep going after parts of the performance that are going to help us improve and for that’s where my job begins and ends, whilst we’re at the training ground, going after the bits with the lads where we need to improve.

“I’m very pleased though (with the points tally), as one thing we have to say is that we’ve got a really good group of men together. I’m really pleased with the character and the personalities we’ve got within the squad. We know that because of the turnover in the summer it’s not going to feel and look perfect straight away, but that’s not taking anything away from the lads.”

Writer’s View

After the two seasons that Luton have had to endure, it’s amazing that anyone would question their performances. It was so important that Matt Bloomfield halted that losing mentality that may have been installed within the squad. Obviously, they were and are one of the favourites for promotion, but they also were last season in the Championship. The more they keep winning, the better the performances will get. If they finish in the top two come May, nobody will care how they got there.
