Wrexham Consider Ambitious Move For Premier League Defender

Wrexham are weighing up a move for Bournemouth defender Chris Mepham as Phil Parkinson seeks to strengthen his struggling backline.

The Welsh club have conceded five goals across their opening two Championship fixtures and are exploring defensive reinforcements alongside ongoing pursuits in midfield and attack.

Wrexham Move for Mepham

Mepham, 27, has entered the final year of his contract at Bournemouth and is expected to leave the south coast in search of regular football to safeguard his place in the Wales national squad. Sunderland opted not to pursue a permanent move after his loan spell last season, creating an opening for other Championship clubs.

Wrexham, who have already secured high-profile additions including Conor Coady from Leicester City and a record £10 million capture of Nathan Broadhead, are now pushing to add Mepham to their growing pool of Welsh-qualified players. Striker Kieffer Moore and goalkeeper Danny Ward have also joined the Racecourse this summer.

Other Targets in View

Liverpool youngster Lewis Koumas remains on the radar, with the teenager viewed as a potential solution to the creative gap left by Josh Windass’ long-term injury. Norwich City and Sheffield United are also monitoring his availability, but Wrexham believe they are in a strong position to win the race.

Cardiff City captain Callum Chambers has emerged as another defensive option, while the club have made enquiries for Sheffield United stalwart Jack Robinson. The Blades, however, are reluctant to sanction his departure without a replacement lined up, with Coventry City defender Bobby Thomas reportedly under consideration at Bramall Lane.

Parkinson’s Ambition

Parkinson has been vocal about his desire to harness Wrexham’s Welsh identity, with the recent influx of international players seen as a source of pride for both supporters and the city.

“I think it’s a great lift for everybody because with Wrexham everyone’s very proud of the club and the country. And to attract players who are internationals shows where we are.”

With several deals still in play, Wrexham are moving quickly to ensure their squad can cope with the demands of a Championship season. Mepham’s availability makes him a priority, given both his pedigree and the relative simplicity of completing a permanent transfer compared to loan negotiations elsewhere.

Writer’s View

Wrexham’s pursuit of Mepham reflects both their ambition and their awareness of where weaknesses lie. The centre-back would not only add international experience but also deepen a squad that has already been upgraded significantly this summer.

Whether or not Mepham arrives, Wrexham’s intent in the market underlines their determination to establish themselves as a competitive force in the Championship rather than simply surviving.
