Queens Park Rangers Among Clubs Chasing League One Star

Queens Park Rangers are considering a move for Bolton Wanderers defender George Johnston as Julien Stéphan looks to bolster his squad before the transfer deadline.

The Championship side face competition from Preston North End and Wycombe Wanderers, with all three clubs monitoring the 26-year-old’s situation.

Johnston is in the final year of his contract at the Toughsheet Community Stadium and could be available for a relatively modest fee. The centre-back, who has made 142 appearances for Bolton since joining from Feyenoord in 2021, was part of the side that beat Plymouth Argyle 2-0 at the weekend.

Defensive Reinforcement a Priority

With Jake Clarke-Salter sidelined and Jimmy Dunne also out of action, QPR’s options at the back are stretched. New signing Amadou Mbengue partnered Liam Morrison in the 1-1 draw with Preston North End on the opening day, while experienced defender Steve Cook was named on the bench.

Johnston’s arrival would add further depth and competition, as well as giving Stéphan a left-sided option in central defence. The former Scotland Under-21 international has yet to play in the Championship, but a move this summer would present the chance to test himself at a higher level.

In Demand Across the EFL

According to reports, both Preston and Wycombe have also expressed interest, while Bolton may face a decision over whether to cash in now or risk losing him for free next summer.

Johnston was a regular for Wanderers in 2022/23 but missed the following season after undergoing knee surgery. He returned to action in 2024/25 and has re-established himself as part of the matchday squad. The former Liverpool academy player has built a solid reputation in the EFL for his composure and reliability at the back.

Transfer Window Ticking Down

For QPR, time is a factor, with just three weeks remaining before the summer window closes. Stéphan has already added four new signings plus a permanent deal for Karamoko Dembélé, but defensive recruitment remains a clear priority.

The Hoops began the season with a solid point against Preston, taking the lead through a Ben Whiteman own goal before being pegged back by Milutin Osmajic. Stéphan has spoken positively about his squad’s work ethic but will want more experience and cover to navigate the Championship campaign.

Writer’s View

Johnston’s situation makes him an attractive target — affordable, available, and with proven EFL quality. For QPR, he could slot straight into a starting role while also providing long-term value if tied down on a new deal. With Preston and Wycombe also circling, decisive action will be needed if Stéphan is to secure his man before the deadline.
