Bradford City Seal Agreement With 21-Year-Old

Bradford City have handed Bobby Pointon a new contract in recognition of the academy graduate’s rapid rise into the first team.

The 21-year-old winger has signed through to summer 2027, with an option for a further year, after cementing his place under Graham Alexander.

Pointon’s extension follows an 84‑appearance burst since breaking through in 2023, including 50 outings and eight goals last season. The deal also comes after a gritty 0-0 draw at Northampton, where City could not find a breakthrough but remained solid in a feisty contest.

Alexander explains the decision

Alexander said the club wanted to reward Pointon’s progress and align his terms more closely with senior teammates, noting that academy promotions can create pay gaps that need addressing for fairness and balance within the group.

“It was something we spoke about in the summer, myself, Ryan (Sparks) and David (Sharpe) about where Bobby is and where we believe he can get to. This is all new for him but it is for a few players and we just felt as well that there was a little bit of disparity in his wage compared to others.

“That can happen at clubs when academy players come through. We just felt through fairness that Bobby deserved a better deal. He’s a young player but he’s not on trial, he’s not a youth-team player that’s shown a little bit of promise in two or three games.

Local lad locked in

A Valley Parade product, Pointon has progressed from promising academy talent to reliable senior pick, trusted to start or influence games from the bench. The club view the new terms as protection on an important asset and a message to other pathway players that performance and consistency will be recognised. Bringing him into line with established earners also reduces the risk of dressing-room inequities, a theme Alexander has stressed since his arrival.

Against Northampton, Pointon was one of five players booked during a first-half flashpoint, then managed the remainder of his performance sensibly. Alexander framed it as part of his development, praising the way he kept discipline after the early caution.

With a multi-year commitment agreed, City can continue shaping attacking patterns around Pointon’s energy, pressing and end product while he pushes to add goals and assists. The extension also gives the club control over his future during a period when EFL sides are increasingly safeguarding homegrown value.

Writer’s View

This is smart business from Bradford City. Pointon has turned promise into reliability and the club have acted before any noise around his contract could build. The structure, to 2027 with an option, protects resale value and rewards performance without disrupting squad balance. If he adds a little more punch in the final third, this could be the deal that underpins his next step from dependable starter to match-winner.
