Derby County have opened discussions with Chelsea over a potential loan move for defender Alfie Gilchrist, as John Eustace continues to strengthen his squad for the 2025/26 Championship campaign.
The 21-year-old, who can operate at right-back or centre-half, spent last season on loan at Sheffield United, making a solid impression before an ankle injury curtailed his involvement in the run-in. Despite missing the Blades’ play-off fixtures, Gilchrist registered significant Championship experience and even played against Derby in the regular season.
Versatile Defender Could Be Latest Pride Park Arrival
According to reports, Derby are keen to add Gilchrist to their ranks as their third loan signing from a Premier League side this summer. The Rams have already brought in Owen Beck from Liverpool and David Ozoh from Crystal Palace, both expected to play key roles under Eustace.

Alfie Gilchrist Career
Gilchrist is highly rated at Stamford Bridge and has made appearances for Chelsea’s senior side. However, with competition for places fierce in West London, another loan move is viewed as the best next step in his development. A return to the second tier would offer him regular minutes in a demanding environment.
A lifelong Blues supporter, he joined the club’s academy in 2014 after spells with Old Isleworthians and QPR. Gilchrist captained Chelsea’s youth sides and made his senior debut in 2023. He scored his first goal for the club in a win over Everton in April 2024 and spent the 2024–25 season on loan at Sheffield United, making 30 league appearances.
Derby County Near Kick Off
Eustace’s men kick off their season away at Stoke City on Saturday, and Derby are believed to be pushing to finalise a deal in time for the defender to be included in the matchday squad. Gilchrist has already provided an assist against Stoke during his time at Bramall Lane — a moment he may look to replicate in a different shirt this time around.
Derby’s business this summer has reflected a clear plan: blend youth with proven Championship talent. The club’s return to the second tier has been met with intent in the market, and Gilchrist would be another player capable of slotting in seamlessly at this level.
Writer’s View
Alfie Gilchrist ticks all the right boxes for Derby County: young, versatile, experienced in the Championship, and hungry for minutes. His time at Sheffield United showed promise, and his technical ability fits the modern mould of a defender.
If the Rams can get this deal over the line, it would be a smart, low-risk addition to a side that’s already shaping up well under Eustace. With Beck and Ozoh already on board, Gilchrist would complete an impressive Premier League loan trio.
