Grant Hanley, who played a key role in Birmingham City’s League One title-winning campaign last season, has completed a permanent move to Hibernian.
The 33-year-old has signed a contract running until the summer of 2027, marking a return to his native Scotland after a long and successful career south of the border.
League One Promotion Push
Hanley joined Blues midway through their promotion push and brought vital experience to John Eustace’s defence. His arrival coincided with a run of form that saw Birmingham storm to the third-tier title, securing a return to the Championship at the first time of asking.
That promotion was the fourth of Hanley’s career, having previously helped Newcastle United and Norwich City climb into the Premier League. Across his career, the commanding defender has made over 430 senior appearances, the majority of which came in the top two divisions of English football.
His contributions extended to the international stage too, where he remains a regular for Scotland under Steve Clarke, amassing 62 caps to date.
Now, Hanley embarks on a new challenge with Hibs, who moved quickly to secure his signature amid competition from other clubs. Head Coach David Gray hailed the move as a significant one for the club’s defensive unit.
“He’s a strong, robust defender that can play in any role across our back three,” said Gray. “He’s a real leader both on and off the pitch and a player of his experience will add a lot to the team.”
Sporting Director Malky Mackay echoed those sentiments, revealing that Hanley had several offers on the table before opting for Easter Road. The defender’s leadership and top-level experience are expected to have a major impact on Hibs’ young core.
Hanley becomes the latest ex-EFL stalwart to head north of the border, and will be expected to anchor Hibernian’s defence as they look to push on under Gray in 2025/26.

Writer’s View
Birmingham City fans will remember Grant Hanley as a stabilising presence during a critical run-in. While his time at St Andrew’s was short, it was impactful, and his move to Hibs feels like the right next step.
Returning to Scotland with a full career of English football behind him, Hanley’s leadership could be exactly what Hibs need to solidify their back line. His departure also subtly closes a chapter for Blues, one that ended in promotion, and he will always be remembered there despite his limited impact.
