Peterborough United have been linked with experienced free agent Tom Lees as they look to bolster their defence following a major injury blow to club captain Sam Hughes.
Manager Darren Ferguson confirmed that the club will seek to add a centre-back after Hughes was ruled out for up to three months with an Achilles tear.
Posh Turn to Veteran Option After Hughes Blow
Hughes, who only joined Posh on a permanent deal from Stockport County this summer, suffered the injury in pre-season. His absence leaves Ferguson with limited options at the heart of defence, relying on Oscar Wallin and David Okagbue as starters, with George Nevett and academy product Lucca Mendonca providing cover.
The setback has prompted a search for reinforcements, and former Huddersfield Town defender Tom Lees has emerged as a possible solution. The 34-year-old left the Terriers in the summer after his contract was not renewed, ending a four-year spell in which he made 155 appearances.
Lees brings a wealth of Football League experience, having also featured extensively for Sheffield Wednesday, where he played 254 times, and previously for Leeds United, Bury and Accrington Stanley. Across his career, he has racked up a total of 660 senior appearances.

Change in Transfer Strategy for Ferguson?
If signed, Lees would represent a notable shift in Peterborough’s usual recruitment approach. The current oldest player in the Posh squad is Hughes at 28, with the club traditionally favouring younger, development-focused signings.
Bringing in Lees would add leadership, physicality and Championship-level know-how to a relatively youthful defensive unit. However, no official comment has been made by the club regarding their interest at this stage.
Ferguson’s need for an experienced head at the back is clear. With a demanding League One season ahead and hopes of returning to the Championship, Posh may be willing to deviate from their usual strategy to stabilise the back line.
Writer’s View
Tom Lees would be a smart short-term solution to a difficult situation for Peterborough United. His experience and defensive instincts could prove invaluable in Hughes’ absence, and while his signing might go against the club’s typical youth-first model, it shows ambition and adaptability.
With League One set to be more competitive than ever, this could be the kind of pragmatic move that helps Posh stay in the promotion mix.
