West Bromwich Albion Could Be Tempted Into Lucrative Player Sale

West Bromwich Albion are considering the sale of Norwegian defender Torbjørn Heggem after receiving a €6 million (£5.2 million) offer from Serie A side Bologna.

The Baggies could be tempted to cash in just one year after signing the 26-year-old for a fraction of that fee.

Italian Interest Grows in West Brom’s Player of the Season

According to Quotidiano Sportivo and Corriere dello Sport, Bologna are targeting Heggem as they look to strengthen at left-back. The Italian club have tabled a €6 million bid (£5.2 million), while West Brom are said to value the player between €5–10 million (£4.3-£8.7 million).

Heggem joined the club from IF Brommapojkarna in July 2024 for just €600,000 (£520,000), but quickly became a key figure under Carlos Corberán, making 45 Championship appearances and winning the club’s Player of the Season award. His blend of defensive intelligence, aerial dominance, and composure in possession has made him one of the most reliable full-backs in the division.

The 6ft 6in Norwegian international also made his senior debut for his country in October 2024 and has since earned seven caps. That rise in profile is believed to have attracted Bologna’s attention, particularly after their move for Union St Gilloise’s Fedde Leysen stalled due to the Belgian side’s higher asking price.

While no decision has been made, the financial uplift on a player signed for a modest fee could prove persuasive for West Brom, who continue to balance their squad-building with the club’s longer-term financial outlook.

Heggem’s current deal at The Hawthorns runs until summer 2027, meaning Albion are under no immediate pressure to sell. However, if Bologna increase their bid or include add-ons, the balance may tip toward a sale.

Writer’s View

Torbjørn Heggem has been one of the Championship’s most consistent performers, and his physicality, maturity, and adaptability have made him a standout in a West Brom side that narrowly missed out on promotion last season. While the club will be reluctant to lose such a key figure, the economics of a €6 million deal (£5.2 million) just 12 months after signing him for €600,000 (£520,000) are hard to ignore.

If Bologna meet the upper end of Albion’s valuation, the deal would represent smart business, though replacing Heggem’s presence on and off the pitch will not be easy.
