Reading have completed the signing of winger Paddy Lane from Portsmouth, bringing in the 24-year-old for an undisclosed fee in what is their first cash signing since Ovie Ejaria’s £3.5 million arrival over four years ago.
Lane’s move was unveiled during the club’s Purple Turtle Pre-Season Social, marking a significant moment in what has otherwise been a financially restrained period for the Royals.
Three-Year Deal For Lane
The former Fleetwood Town winger signs a three-year contract and is expected to feature immediately in Noel Hunt’s League One opener away at Lincoln City. The player is not popular at the LNER Stadium after mocking their fans following Pompey’s 2-0 win in 2024, which cost the Imps a play-off spot.
Lane made 23 Championship appearances for Portsmouth last season, scoring once after playing a key role in their 2023/24 League One title-winning campaign, where he netted 12 goals and delivered a string of standout performances from wide areas.
“Paddy is an exciting addition for us,” Hunt said. “He’s got great energy, can beat a man, and isn’t afraid to take chances in the final third. To play regularly in the Championship at his age speaks volumes, and we believe there’s even more to come.”
Royals Add Much-Needed Width
Hunt had been clear in recent weeks that recruiting wingers was a top priority, and Lane brings proven third-tier pedigree with the versatility to operate across the front line. His arrival provides both quality and tactical flexibility to a Reading side still reshaping its squad following last season’s survival fight.
The move represents a fresh start for Lane, who had featured in John Mousinho’s pre-season plans at Portsmouth, including a cameo in their 4-0 win over Reading last weekend. But with competition for places fierce at Fratton Park, the winger has opted for a new challenge in Berkshire, where he is likely to be a key figure.
His previous spell at Fleetwood Town earned him international recognition with Northern Ireland, and his performances under Mousinho helped him rediscover the attacking threat that made him such a dangerous wide man in League One.
Writer’s View
This is a statement signing for Reading and an early sign that Noel Hunt means business. Paddy Lane offers more than just energy out wide—he brings end product, consistency, and a title-winner’s mentality.
Spending a fee after such a long financial drought is also a signal to the fans that the club intends to compete properly this season. If Lane finds his best form, Reading have landed one of the most astute transfers of the League One window so far.
