Northampton Town have confirmed the loan signing of highly rated Manchester United forward Ethan Wheatley for the 2025/26 season.
The 19-year-old striker will link up with Kevin Nolan’s side ahead of their League One opener against Wigan Athletic this weekend, as he looks to reignite his development following a difficult first loan spell last term.
Northampton Secure United Talent After Walsall Loan Setback
Wheatley made just four appearances for Walsall after joining in January, as the Saddlers collapsed from promotion contention to mid-table obscurity.
Despite that frustration, Wheatley remains highly regarded at Old Trafford. He won United’s Young Player of the Year award in 2023/24 and made his senior debut under Erik ten Hag, becoming the 250th academy graduate to feature for the club.
“Even if my first [loan move] didn’t go well – and it didn’t – I had it in the back of my head… it’s just like a little blip in my early career and, hopefully, I can bounce back from it going into next season,” Wheatley said earlier this summer.
Wheatley was left out of United’s pre-season tour of the US in order to finalise a new loan, with the club prioritising regular senior football as the next step in his development.

Fresh Start at Sixfields
The move represents an opportunity for both player and club. Northampton are looking to build on their consolidation in League One last season under Nolan, and Wheatley’s technical ability and intelligent movement could add a fresh dimension to their forward line.
While his time at Walsall saw him fall out of favour during a disastrous run of form for the team, Wheatley has remained focused on progression. He returned to action for United’s Under-21s in the spring and represented his country at youth level during the summer.
Now at Sixfields, the challenge will be to prove he can contribute consistently in a competitive senior environment. His physical profile, coupled with a strong academy grounding, makes him an intriguing addition for a Northampton squad keen to avoid second-season stagnation.
Writer’s View
This feels like a smart move for all parties. Ethan Wheatley clearly needed a fresh start after a tough spell at Walsall, and Northampton offer the right balance of pressure and opportunity. Kevin Nolan has experience working with young players, and Wheatley will be determined to show why Manchester United value him so highly.
If the Cobblers can provide the right platform, this could be one of League One’s most quietly effective loan moves. If they struggle, as expected, then it could be a case of another bad choice for the young striker.
