Sheffield Wednesday defender Max Lowe is set to leave the club after handing in his notice amid transfer interest from Leicester City and Preston North End.
The 28-year-old is expected to depart Hillsborough before the middle of August, just a year after joining the club.
Owls Facing Key Departure Ahead of Season Opener
The Owls’ preparations for the new Championship season have been dealt a blow with the imminent exit of Lowe. The left-back, who made 37 appearances in all competitions last season, is now attracting serious interest from Leicester and Preston, both of whom are looking to strengthen ahead of their own league campaigns.

According to multiple reports, including BBC’s Rob Staton, Lowe has formally submitted his notice and is pushing for a move away before the 15 August deadline. With just one year completed on his two-year deal, the move comes as a surprise to many at Hillsborough, particularly given the threadbare state of the squad under new head coach Henrik Pedersen.
Lowe’s arrival last summer was seen as a significant addition to the Owls’ back line, but it now appears he will move on after just one season in South Yorkshire.

Leicester and Preston Circle as Wednesday Lose Key Man
Leicester City, recently relegated from the Premier League, are looking to reinforce under new boss Martí Cifuentes. Preston North End are also in the frame, with both clubs understood to be weighing up offers. The timing is problematic for Wednesday, who already face a shortage of senior players heading into the new campaign.
Lowe began his career at Derby County and went on to represent Sheffield United and Nottingham Forest before switching to Wednesday in 2024. His potential exit, especially to a fellow Championship side, would leave Pedersen with little time to secure a replacement and deepen the sense of instability around the club.
Wednesday open their league season away at Leicester: ironically, the club most strongly linked with Lowe’s signature.
Writer’s View
Max Lowe’s departure, if confirmed, is a gut punch for a Wednesday side already scrambling to prepare for the new season. His experience, versatility and reliability were likely to make him a key figure under Henrik Pedersen, and losing him to a divisional rival underlines the scale of the challenge facing the Owls.
With the club still recovering from off-field issues and thin on depth, Wednesday can ill afford to lose senior players without immediate replacements lined up.
