Plymouth Argyle Make Loan Move for Celtic Defender

Plymouth Argyle have submitted a formal loan offer to sign Celtic centre-back Stephen Welsh for the 2025–26 season, according to Sky Sports journalist Anthony Joseph.

The move, if successful, would add depth and experience to a squad eager to bounce back following relegation from the Championship.

Argyle Eye Defensive Stability with Welsh Approach

Welsh, 25, is under contract with the Scottish champions until 2027, and the proposed loan does not include an option to buy. The defender is currently weighing up his next step after returning to full training at Lennoxtown, having recovered from a shoulder injury sustained in a pre-season friendly against Cork City.

This marks the second successive summer that Welsh has been the subject of loan interest. He spent the second half of last season with Belgian top-flight side KV Mechelen, where he made a positive impression. The Belgian outfit had hoped to turn that move into a permanent deal, but negotiations broke down after Celtic demanded a fee they were unwilling to match.

Now fit again, Welsh has re-entered the market, and a switch to Home Park would see him reunite with former Celtic teammate Conor Hazard, who joined Plymouth in 2023 and remains a key figure in goal. It would also provide manager Wayne Carlisle with another option in central defence, an area that saw frequent changes last term.

Welsh has made 62 senior appearances for Celtic since making his debut in 2020 and was once tipped as a future mainstay at the heart of their back line. However, a series of managerial changes and increased competition—most recently from summer arrivals under Brendan Rodgers—has made regular first-team minutes difficult to come by.

A Proving Ground for a Promising Career

Plymouth’s interest comes at a critical point in Welsh’s career. Once a Scotland U21 regular, his development has stalled through lack of consistent game time in Glasgow. A move to League One offers the chance to rebuild momentum and put himself back in the shop window, whether for a return to Celtic’s starting XI or a longer-term move elsewhere.

From Argyle’s perspective, bringing in a defender with European and top-flight experience would be a significant coup. With only weeks remaining until the new season begins, the club have been quietly working to strengthen the spine of the squad and are believed to be targeting another centre-back even if the Welsh deal is finalised.

Writer’s View

Stephen Welsh to Plymouth Argyle ticks all the boxes for a successful loan. The Pilgrims get a technically sound, positionally intelligent centre-back who’s played in big games for one of Britain’s biggest clubs, while Welsh gets the regular football he’s been crying out for.

With the memory of his strong spell at Mechelen still fresh, the move to Devon could provide the ideal platform for him to showcase his talents in a more physical, unforgiving league. It’s a short-term solution for both sides—but potentially a very effective one.
