Former Sheffield Wednesday Man Reveals Delight At Joining ‘Massive Club’

Recently departed Sheffield Wednesday defender Akin Famewo has revealed his delight at joining Hull City after his move across Yorkshire was confirmed earlier today.

The 26-year-old joined the Owls in 2022 from Norwich City, helping the club earn promotion from League One in his first season. He made the transition to the Championship, featuring heavily upon Danny Rohl’s appointment in October 2023. Under the German’s stewardship, Wednesday pulled off a miracle to ensure their second tier status.

Famewo struggled with injuries last season. This led to the centre back making just 13 league appearances. Despite that, he was offered a new deal at the end of the season.

This coincided with the ongoing wage saga under owner Dejphon Chansiri, which saw a number of players and staff left unpaid. An exodus ensued, with the former Charlton Athletic man’s exit confirmed earlier this month.

Hull Swoop To Snatch Famewo

Famewo’s departure from Hillsborough saw him immediately linked to Championship rivals Hull City. His arrival at the Tigers was confirmed earlier today, where he penned a two-year deal. Upon the announcement, he revealed he was excited to join a ‘massive club’:

“I’m really excited to get started and get going with the boys. It’s a proud day for me to sign here. This is a massive club with a great history and I’m looking forward to our future together. We talked about the plans for the club and what the club wants to achieve. They made it clear they wanted to bring me here and be a part of the club moving forward.

“I can’t wait to join in with the lads and get up to speed with them. The team has got a lot of experience already and hopefully I can add to that. I would describe myself as composed on the ball, aggressive on the pitch and passionate. On a personal level, I hope to bring my best every time I play. I’m ready to work hard for the team and ready to achieve with this club.”

Writer’s View

It’s an incredibly difficult time to be a Sheffield Wednesday fan. Famewo is one of a long line of players who have opted to continue their careers elsewhere and it is a bitter blow to lose yet another first team regular to a Championship rival. The Owls are facing an increasingly difficult situation ahead of the new campaign and it’s anyone’s guess as to what lineup they will field on the opening day clash with Leicester City on August 10th.
