Derby County have secured the return of David Ozoh on a season-long loan from Crystal Palace.
The 19-year-old midfielder rejoins the Rams after a promising spell at Pride Park during the second half of the 2023/24 campaign.
Midfield Options Strengthened as Eustace Gets His Man
Ozoh’s arrival adds energy and depth to Derby’s midfield as they prepare for life in the Championship. He featured ten times for the Rams last season after joining on loan in January, impressing with his physical presence and maturity on the ball.
John Eustace, who took over in February, briefly worked with Ozoh during that previous stint and has moved quickly to bring him back into the fold. The teenager trained with the squad this week and could feature in Derby’s final pre-season fixtures.
Crystal Palace confirmed the move on Monday, stating the England youth international will continue his development under Eustace, who has been backed to push for a top half finish this season after a challenging time last season.
“We’re really pleased to bring David back in,” Eustace told the club’s official website. “He’s someone I know well from last season and he fits exactly what we’re trying to build here.”
The move has been met with cautious optimism among supporters, many of whom were impressed by Ozoh’s maturity during his previous spell. While he did not start every match, his cameos were often impactful, particularly in the high-tempo games where Derby struggled for control late in the season.
Speaking to the club’s official site, Ozoh said:
“This was always the first place I wanted to come back to. There’s unfinished business here and I’m grateful for the faith shown in me again.”
Ozoh, who has also represented England at Under-19 level, made his Premier League debut for Palace in January 2023 and has long been tipped as one of the club’s brightest young prospects. Palace were reportedly keen for him to gain more senior experience, and Derby’s infrastructure and ambition made them a natural choice.
The Rams have been relatively measured in the transfer market, focusing on smart loan deals and players with the potential to grow. Ozoh fits that profile, and his existing familiarity with the club’s environment should ease the transition back into competitive action.

Writer’s View
This is a smart piece of business by Derby. David Ozoh might not be the marquee name some fans crave, but he offers exactly what this side has lacked at times: legs in midfield, controlled aggression, and tactical discipline. His familiarity with the squad and with Eustace is an added bonus, meaning he can hit the ground running.
If Derby are serious about bouncing straight back, then Ozoh’s presence could quietly be one of the more important signings of the summer.
