Coventry City have finally confirmed the signing of goalkeeper Carl Rushworth on a season-long loan from Premier League outfit Brighton & Hove Albion.
The 24-year-old had been linked with another move away from the AMEX Stadium this summer and looked to be heading to Scottish giants Rangers. The move fell through last week, with reports of an imminent move to the West Midlands surfacing shortly after.
Rushworth is a goalkeeper that has long been tipped to enjoy a stellar career. His first major loan saw him become an ever-present at Walsall in League Two during the 2021/22 campaign, which earned him a move up to League One with Lincoln City the following season.
His form at the LNER Stadium saw him earn a spot in the England under-21 squad for the European Championships, which the Three Lions eventually won. However, the shot stopper played second fiddle to James Trafford.
Despite that, another temporary transfer followed, this time to Swansea City. His time at the Swans was a huge success and he picked up a number of individual accolades, including the Supporters Player of the Year and the Players’ Player of the Year.
Rushworth Looking To Bounce Back From Frustrating Season
After three years of regular football, Rushworth endured a frustrating 2024/25. Embarking on another loan, this time with Hull City, he was forced to sit on the bench before eventually breaking into the team in January. However, after just two appearances, he was recalled by Brighton following an injury to backup goalkeeper Jason Steele.
He can’t wait, and neither can we. 😤

Coventry offers the ex-England under-21 international an opportunity to reignite his career. Speaking upon the announcement, he admitted he was delighted to finally get the deal over the line:
“I am just really happy that I can get it over the line and kick on now, and get some minutes in me before the season starts.
“I keep telling people but I am really excited, I truly am. It has been a long time coming but now I am here it is almost like I am itching to get going.”

Coventry struggled in the goalkeeping department last season, so Frank Lampard will be delighted to get this deal done. Rushworth is an excellent shot stopper and one that could offer real stability between the sticks. The 24-year-old will be hoping that this is a move that gets his career back on track after enduring arguably the toughest season of his young career.
