Walsall Considering Move For Experienced Midfielder

Walsall are weighing up whether or not to give Romaine Sawyers a contract following a trial, according to Football League World

The 33-year-old is currently a free agent after leaving League Two rivals Bristol Rovers at the end of last season.

Sawyers spent three years playing for the Sadlers between the years of 2013-16, one stint on loan before joining the club permanently in the summer of 2013.

He played as a trialist for the side against Premier League side Aston Villa last week, and is understood to be waiting on a contract offer before deciding his next career move.

Walsall Looking to go One Better

After the heartbreak of last season’s embarrassment, Mat Sadler and his side will be looking to go one better by earning promotion to the third tier this season.

With this in mind, despite multiple player departures, nine new signings have come through the door at the Bescot Stadium, with Sawyers potentially looking to become the 10th.

With midfielders Alfie Chang, Ryan Stirk and Jack Earing all departing, Sawyers could be the perfect addition to the side to give the remaining midfielders some competition and provide vital experience in the middle of the park.

Romaine Sawyers and his Career so Far

The vastly experienced midfielder has played for his fair share of clubs over his career, including the likes of West Bromwich Albion, Brentford, Stoke City and AFC Wimbledon.

His career started in the Midlands with West Brom, where he experienced temporary moves away at the likes of Port Vale and Walsall, before joining the Saddlers permanently the next summer. He spent three years at the Bescot, winning League One promotion with the side and making over 160 appearances before joining Brentford, where he spent another three years.

A seven-figure move back to the Baggies followed, where he helped the side win promotion to the Premier League. After playing 19 times in the top-flight in the 2020/21 season, a loan move up North to Stoke was his next move.

After leaving both the Potters and the Albion, Cardiff City came calling. After two seasons in Wales and a few months as a free agent, League Two side AFC Wimbledon took a chance on him in December 2024, but after a month, he joined League One side Bristol Rovers.

A move back to a club where he arguably played the most consistently throughout the course of his career could be his next career move as he looks to round out the back end of his football career.

Writer’s View

Sawyer’s return to Walsall could be a move that suits all parties. The 33-year-old offers competition and experience to the midfield areas, which would be ideal considering the fact that in recent years he’s not played much first-team football.

The fact that the player is waiting for a contract offer before deciding anything else implies he wants the move back to the club.
