Wrexham look set to win the race for former Sheffield Wednesday attacker Josh Windass following his exit from Hillsborough, according to Give Me Sport.
The 31-year-old brought to an end his four-and-a-half-year stay at the Owls last week after it was announced that his contract had been cancelled by mutual consent. This followed two months of unpaid wages, allowing Windass to give notice of his intention to depart the club.
This was confirmed on Thursday alongside teammate Michael Smith, leading to a scramble to sign the ex-Rangers man. Wrexham were immediately linked to his signature, with it confirmed on Friday that they intended to open negotiations with the player.
Windass Set For Wrexham Medical
The Red Dragons are set to embark on life in the second tier for the first time since 1982 following their meteoric rise through the football pyramid. Three successive promotions have seen them rise from the National League to the Championship, with Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney harbouring ambitions of guiding the club to the Premier League.
They’ve already added striker Ryan Hardie to their ranks this summer from Plymouth Argyle, whilst they broke their transfer record to bring in left-back Liberato Cacace from Italian side Empoli last week. More new arrivals are expected before the start of the campaign, with the experienced Windass looking likely to be the next through the door.

It is claimed that a medical is scheduled for later today, although Championship rivals Coventry City and Norwich City haven’t giving up hope of hijacking the transfer. The 2023 League One play-off hero has spoken to manager Phil Parkinson remotely, with Wrexham currently on tour of New Zealand.
Leicester City and Derby County were also linked to the attacking midfielder, but it looks as if Wrexham have managed to pull off another major coup.
Writer’s View
Wrexham will be delighted if they can get this signing over the line. Windass is a player with bags of experience at this level and one that will add much needed Championship quality to Phil Parkinson’s squad. Winning this race ahead of the likes of Coventry, Leicester and Norwich show the pulling power the Red Dragons have and it will be interesting to see how they follow this up in the coming weeks.
