Huddersfield Town Target League One Winner

Huddersfield Town have set their sights on Birmingham City midfielder Marc Leonard, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The Terriers are entering a new era under the stewardship of Lee Grant, who was named as Michael Duff’s permanent successor in May. It’s the former Manchester United and Stoke City goalkeeper’s first managerial role and he has already set upon building a squad capable of challenging for success in League One.

After a disappointing 10th placed finish last season, the new boss has already nine signings so far this summer, including the likes of Lynden Gooch, Ryan Ledson, Marcus Harness and Sean Roughan. More new arrivals are expected before the campaign kicks off next month.

Proven League One Experience Targeted

It has now been claimed that Huddersfield are exploring a move for Birmingham midfielder Marc Leonard. The 23-year-old only joined the Blues last summer on a four-year deal from Brighton & Hove Albion, following on from two successful loan spells with Northampton Town.

The former Scotland under-21 international did make 35 league appearances for the West Midlanders last season, although the majority of those outings came from the substitutes bench. As such, it was reported last month that Chris Davies may allow the player to leave on a temporary deal in order to secure a more regular starting role.

Birmingham’s move to the Championship means his already limited opportunities may become rarer, meaning a drop back to League One seems the most likely scenario. This has seen Huddersfield take note and they are now considering making an approach, although it is not clear if they are considering a permanent deal.

It has also been reported that the West Yorkshire-based outfit are keen on Birmingham attacker Alfie May. Sky Sports journalist Rob Dorsett has claimed that they are exploring a bid north of £ million as they look to add competition to their forward line. Like Leonard, the ex-Charlton Athletic man only moved to St Andrew’s last summer, where he scored 16 times in 44 league appearances.

Leonard would be a fantastic signing for Huddersfield, although they do face competition from a host of Championship clubs. Despite that, the midfielder may be tempted to move back into the familiar surroundings of League One in order to nail down a regular starting place. Huddersfield should be able to provide that and with them expected to challenge for promotion, he could then get his opportunity in the second tier next season.
