Bolton Wanderers Captain Delivers First Words After Exit

George Thomason has admitted he is excited to join the project at Wrexham after departing Bolton Wanderers earlier today.

The 24-year-old joined the Trotters in 2020 from non league outfit Longridge Town and after two separate loan spells at Bamber Bridge, nailed down a spot at the Toughsheet Community Stadium. He had grown into an important figure at the Greater Manchester-based side and was eventually named club captain last year.

His commanding performances in the centre of the pitch had already earned Championship interest. He was the subject of a £1 million bid from Bristol City in 2023, but opted to stay put in order to continue his development in familiar surroundings. This saw him land a new four-year deal shortly after.

The midfielder made 46 appearances in all competitions last season, scoring five and contributing three assists.

Thomason Ready For Championship Berth

With two years remaining on his contract, Bolton were in a strong position when it came to negotiating Thomason’s exit. That didn’t deter Wrexham though, who have the cash to splash under the guidance of Hollywood duo Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

According to The Bolton Newsa fee of £1.2 million was enough to secure his services, with a three-year deal at the STōK Cae Ras agreed. Speaking to official club media upon his unveiling, he said:

“I’m buzzing to be here, and I can’t wait to be a part of the journey that the Club has been on.

“It’s a really exciting time to be a part of the Football Club and it’s going to be a really exciting season.”

Thomason becomes the fourth new arrival at the Welsh-based club this summer, following on from goalkeeper Danny Ward, left-back Liberato Cacace and attacker Ryan Hardie.

Writer’s View

George Thomason has been on the radar of Championship clubs for a number of years and its no surprise to see him finally take the leap. He will feel that Wrexham offer him a very real opportunity of breaking into the Premier League in the coming years, which perhaps played a major role in his decision. For Bolton, the seven figure fee received will soften the blow and allow them to strengthen their squad as they target a return to the second tier themselves. Steven Schumacher has already brought in one central midfielder in Xavier Simons from Hull City and it’s likely that another will follow in the coming weeks.
