Huddersfield Town look set to land former Stoke City and Sunderland winger Lynden Gooch, who is undergoing a medical ahead of a proposed free transfer.
The 29-year-old was at the Terriers’ training ground on 10 July and is expected to become the latest addition to Lee Grant’s rapidly evolving League One squad.
Huddersfield Target Experience With Gooch Move
Following his release from Stoke City this summer, Gooch has wasted no time in finding a potential new home. The USA international made 53 appearances for the Potters across two seasons, contributing two goals before a hamstring injury curtailed his 2024–25 campaign. With over 200 games under his belt for Sunderland earlier in his career, including in the Premier League, Championship, and League One, Gooch arrives with a wealth of experience.
Now, he is poised to bring that pedigree to a Huddersfield side undergoing a major rebuild. Manager Lee Grant, embarking on his first season in the dugout, has already seen a number of senior players depart, including long-serving captain Jonathan Hogg. That has created both a leadership vacuum and the need for seasoned professionals capable of guiding a younger squad through the rigours of a promotion push.
Gooch’s versatility makes him a strong tactical fit for Grant, whether the rookie boss opts for a back three or a more traditional back four. Comfortable as a winger or wing-back, the Californian offers flexibility on the left flank and tactical assurance, traits that could prove vital as the Terriers reshape their identity under new leadership.

Terriers Overhaul Squad in Promotion Push
The Gooch deal would follow a series of moves aimed at refreshing Huddersfield’s core. Joe Low has arrived from Wycombe Wanderers, Ryan Ledson joined after a long spell at Preston North End, while Marcus Harness made the switch from Ipswich Town, where he previously worked under Grant during his time as a coach.
Despite being some years removed from his prime at Sunderland, Gooch’s pedigree remains valuable. He played a key role in the Black Cats’ 2021 EFL Trophy triumph and was a starter in their 2022 League One play-off final win. His ability to contribute in high-pressure moments could prove vital in tight games across a long League One campaign.
Writer’s View
This looks like a smart piece of business for Huddersfield. While Gooch may no longer be the explosive wide man of his early Sunderland days, he still offers reliability, tactical flexibility and big-match know-how—qualities that are difficult to find on a free transfer.
For Lee Grant, who is still untested at senior level, adding players like Gooch provides not just options on the pitch, but support off it too. This isn’t just about depth, it’s about culture. If Huddersfield are serious about returning to the Championship, these are the types of moves that build the foundations for success.
