Cambridge United Rebuffed In Striker Approach

Cambridge United have been turned down as they look to sign Harry Smith from League Two rivals Swindon Town.

The U’s are back in the fourth tier after a very tough season in League One, and are looking to bounce back under Neil Harris after his return a year on from leaving to join Millwall. The Abbey Stadium have already begun their rebuild ahead of next season, with goalkeeper Jake Eastwood from Grimsby Town being their latest incoming.

Robins Reject Smith Bid

According to the Swindon Advertiser, Ian Holloway’s side have rejected a £100,000 bid for their star striker Harry Smith, and that Town have no intention of selling the 30-year-old. He was signed just last summer from the relegated Sutton United, and scored 15 goals in his debut campaign which ended on a positive note following the appointment of former Queens Park Rangers boss Holloway at the County Ground.

It is believed that no offer would be acceptable to sell Smith following his Player of the Season campaign for Swindon, and there is no indication that the former Northampton Town forward would like to leave Wiltshire. Both parties have been working to agree a new contract for the striker, but recent talks have stalled and no agreement is close.

Cambridge have received a healthy fee for academy product Dan Nneji, who has joined Brighton and Hove Albion for a club-record fee, with the 16-year-old centre-back leaving alongside fellow academy player Dom Wright to a fellow category one academy.

Writers’ View

It seems that Cambridge United’s ambitious move for Harry Smith has been promptly rejected and will have to look elsewhere for a star striker this window. Swindon were never likely to let Smith go and with a great partnership between him and manager Ian Holloway, it was nearly inevitable that Smith would want to continue his spell in Swindon after a successful debut campaign.
