Sheffield Wednesday are keen to bring Callum Paterson back to Hillsborough following a summer of uncertainty surrounding the versatile forward.
Talks are believed to have reopened as the club looks to move forward following the lifting of two financial embargoes.
Wednesday Hope to Seal Paterson Return as Embargo Eases
The 30-year-old rejected an initial contract offer earlier in the summer and had since been weighing up alternative options across the Championship, League One and even overseas. However, sources now suggest Wednesday are ready to reopen discussions, provided the final embargo on transfer fees can be lifted in the coming weeks.
Paterson, who previously starred for Cardiff City, became a popular figure during his time at Hillsborough thanks to his versatility and work rate. Although he has not been training with the club this pre-season, the belief remains that he is open to a return, should the circumstances align.
Speaking earlier this year, Paterson made clear his affection for the club.
“Yeah, I’d love to be here,” he said. “But that’s not my decision to make. All I can do is give my all, like I have done every time I’ve been asked, and hopefully things will happen.”
The Owls are in the process of freeing themselves from financial restrictions, having resolved outstanding debts to both players and HMRC. With those obligations met, Wednesday are no longer subject to wage caps or squad size limitations, although they are still unable to pay transfer or loan fees until further payments to other clubs are made.
If the final embargo is cleared, it would allow Wednesday to resume proper squad building, with Paterson’s return representing a significant step forward.
Manager Danny Röhl is unlikely to remain at the club, but the Owls are still understood to be eager to inject experience and character into the squad. Paterson’s familiarity with the club and fanbase would make him a natural fit for a challenging season ahead.

Writer’s View
Bringing Callum Paterson back could be a crucial move for Sheffield Wednesday, both on and off the pitch. His commitment, energy, and adaptability are traits every side needs in the trenches of a long League One campaign. More importantly, he represents stability at a time when Wednesday have been anything but.
If the financial situation continues to improve and terms can be agreed, this feels like a smart, morale-boosting addition that could help kickstart the club’s path back to normality.
