Sheffield Wednesday have been dealt another blow following reports that Josh Windass is set to leave the club.
The Owls have continued to hit the headlines over the last few days, following on from what has been one of the most turbulent summers in the club’s history. With owner Dejphon Chansiri growing increasingly desperate in his attempts to sell the club, players and staff have had to contend with unpaid wages, as well as the ongoing saga with manager Danny Rohl.
Despite actively searching for a new role, it was reported last week that the German had performed a dramatic U-turn and was to return to Hillsborough to continue his position in the dugout. However, news emerged this afternoon that he could leave the club after all following talks with Chansiri and players being unhappy that he missed the start of pre-season.
Windass To Follow Rohl Through The Exit Door?
With some players remaining unpaid for two months, Wednesday have been hit with a three window transfer embargo. The players in question have also been allowed to hand in their notice, with six members of the squad thought to have taken that action.
One of those stars is Josh Windass, who famously helped Wednesday secure a return to the Championship with a last minute winner in the League One play-off final against Barnsley in 2023.
According to Football Insider, the attacking midfielder has been successful in his notice appeal and will become a free agent next month. This is said to have alerted a host of clubs to his availability, including one of his former sides Rangers.

Fellow Championship side Wrexham have also been touted with an interest.

It’s just one saga after another for Sheffield Wednesday at the moment. Supporters will be growing increasingly concerned at the situation, with it looking increasingly likely that they won’t be able to name a senior matchday squad in their opening fixture against Leicester City next month. There will be anger towards Windass, as there has been Rohl, but they all know deep down that there is only one man to blame for this situation. The manager and players performed somewhat of a miracle to secure a top half finish last season. However, nobody would be shocked to see them finish in the bottom three next May.
