Hull City could be forced into a decision on long-serving defender Sean McLoughlin as Championship interest begins to mount once again.
The 28-year-old is entering the final year of his deal and remains of interest to Blackburn Rovers.
Hull Face Contract Dilemma as McLoughlin Interest Resurfaces
The Tigers may soon have to resolve the future of defenderMcLoughlin, with Championship rivals Blackburn reportedly renewing their interest in the Irish centre-back. McLoughlin, now in the final year of his contract, risks departing on a free transfer next summer if an agreement is not reached or a move sanctioned this window.
BBC Humberside reporter Barry Cooper has confirmed that Blackburn’s admiration for McLoughlin, first revealed last year, has not gone away. Rovers are believed to be in the market for a left-footed centre-back and view the Cork-born defender as a strong candidate.
McLoughlin has been a consistent performer for Hull since arriving from Cork City in 2019. After an initial loan spell at St Mirren, he returned to become a first-team regular, notably helping the Tigers to the League One title in 2020–21. He has now racked up 146 appearances for the club, including 38 last season under Liam Rosenior.
Despite that contribution, Hull are well-stocked in central defence. Summer signings Charlie Hughes, John Egan and Semi Ajayi have joined Alfie Jones in a group that already looks Championship-ready. With strong cover in his position and time ticking on his deal, the club face a strategic choice: cash in now or risk losing a loyal servant for nothing next year.
McLoughlin has previously expressed his commitment to the club amid transfer speculation, saying last summer,
“It’s important that you keep your feet on the ground and don’t read too much into the rumours. I’m fully committed to Hull City.”
He also showed his versatility last season, covering at left-back following Ryan Giles’ departure. That flexibility adds value, but may not be enough to guarantee a starting place if the Tigers continue reshaping the squad under Tim Walter.

Writer’s View
This is a delicate moment for Hull City. Sean McLoughlin has served the club with distinction over six seasons, but football is often about timing. With his contract winding down and competition fierce, the Tigers must weigh sentiment against strategy.
If no extension is forthcoming, this summer could be the last real opportunity to command a fee. McLoughlin remains a capable, Championship-level defender, and it’s no surprise to see a club like Blackburn circling. Whether Hull decide to hold firm or sell now could depend as much on player ambition as it does on squad depth.
