Former Player Returns To Lincoln City To Replace Championship-Bound Man

David Preece has returned to Lincoln City as first-team goalkeeping coach, taking up the post he previously held during the club’s National League era.

The 48-year-old replaces Scott Fry, who is set to depart for a role with a Championship side.

Preece Returns to the Imps After Global Experience

Preece is no stranger to Lincoln City. He originally joined as a player in 2012 and took on coaching duties soon after, playing a key role during a difficult period in the club’s history. He remained at Sincil Bank until 2016, combining the dual role of backup goalkeeper and goalkeeping coach.

Since then, Preece has built an impressive CV in the professional game. He was part of the Sunderland coaching staff during their 2021/22 League One play-off triumph and most recently worked with Mumbai City in the Indian Super League, under the umbrella of the City Football Group.

His return comes as Fry prepares to leave the club, though he will remain involved in training sessions during his notice period or until an agreement is reached with his future employer. The appointment adds further continuity to Michael Skubala’s backroom team, with pre-season preparations currently underway in Portugal.

Lincoln supporters will remember Preece as a calm and capable presence during a turbulent chapter, making eight appearances for the club between 2012 and 2013 before officially retiring in 2016. He also enjoyed a distinguished playing career with Darlington, Aberdeen, Silkeborg, and Barnsley, racking up nearly 300 senior appearances.

The former goalkeeper brings a wealth of coaching and playing experience across different leagues and cultures. His knowledge of Lincoln’s internal structure and culture may also prove valuable as the Imps gear up for a pivotal season in League One.

The move reinforces the club’s commitment to maintaining coaching continuity while also integrating individuals who understand the club’s DNA.

Writer’s View

This is a smart and sentimental appointment by Lincoln City. David Preece brings with him international experience, proven success at Sunderland, and a deep understanding of what it means to wear the Imps badge. He arrives at a time of quiet optimism, with a clear plan taking shape under Michael Skubala.

For a club that often values character as much as competence, Preece ticks both boxes. His return won’t grab headlines outside of the LNER Stadium, but it might just prove a key detail in a quietly ambitious campaign.
