Scottish giants Rangers are reportedly weighing up a deal with Hull City for winger Abu Kamara, according to Sky Sports.
New manager Russell Martin was a reported admirer of the 21-year-old last season, after he impressed on loan at Portsmouth.
However, despite interest from both Southampton and his former loan side and rivals, Portsmouth, Kamara ended up at the MKM Stadium, where he made 37 appearances, 25 of which were starts, in all competitions last season, providing five goals and three assists.
The Gers are interested in striking a cut-price deal for the winger, amid the ongoing financial troubles and transfer embargo at Championship side Hull.
Abu Kamara’s Career So Far
Despite Kamara being just 21, he’s experienced his fair share of football already, making just five shy of 100 appearances in men’s football.
Coming through the ranks at Norwich City, Kamara joined Pompey on loan in August 2023, whilst in League One. During that loan spell, Kamara scored eight goals and provided a further 10 assists, making himself a fan favourite at Fratton Park and heavily contributing to their League One title win.
Despite strong links and heavy interest tying him back to Portsmouth, he returned to the Canaries before a big-money move to Championship rivals the Tigers followed, for a fee believed to be around £4.5 million.
However, it’s fair to say his move to the MKM Stadium hasn’t been a huge success, starting just over half of Hull’s Championship games, as the side struggled, only avoiding relegation on goal difference on the final day of the season.
Hull City’s Troubles
Despite Turkish owner Acun Ilicali having clear ambitions of getting the Tigers back to the Premier League, this ambition of returning to the top-flight has not gone to plan in the last few seasons. The club managed to get into the play-offs under former manager Liam Rosenior, but he could not take the club all the way, resulting in a harsh sacking.
German manager Tim Walter was the next to try his luck, but the 49-year-old was sacked after just four months at the helm, with an average win rate of just 18%. Now, Sheffield United manager Ruben Selles managed to keep the club in the division last season, yet was also sacked, leading to the appointment of their fourth manager in four seasons, with Sergej Jakirovic taking charge.
Hull have spent big in previous windows to try and achieve this goal; however, last season was a disaster, and financial mismanagement has led to a three-window transfer ban.
Writer’s View
Kamara still has plenty of time left on his side despite a less-than-ideal season last year. Things were looking up for Hull, but mismanagement off the pitch has affected proceedings on the pitch, leaving that goal of Premier League football looking unrealistic at present.
For both the 21-year-old and Hull, it could be the right move to part ways at this current time. There’s no doubt that Kamara is on a significant wage at the MKM Stadium, and last season, he didn’t live up to those expectations. A move to Scotland might therefore be a move which suits all parties involved.
