Major Update Emerges Regarding Danny Röhl’s Sheffield Wednesday Return

Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Röhl is set to hold clear-the-air talks with the Owls’ players on Monday as he looks to return to the dugout at Hillsborough next season, according to Sky Sports’ James Savundra.

What Has Happened With Röhl?

The awkward situation that Röhl finds himself in is due to the actions of Sheffield Wednesday’s owner, Dejphon Chansiri.

He was appointed as Owls manager in October 2023, just a month after Chanisiri said that he would invest no further money in the club.

The Owls suffered a horrific start to their first season back in the Championship under Xisco Munoz and they were placed under a registration embargo during Röhl’s first month in charge. The young coach managed to guide his new side to survival on the final day of the season despite other off-field problems.

Last season, the 36-year-old helped Sheffield Wednesday to massively punch above their weight. The Owls finished in a very respectable 12th place despite once again being placed under a registration embargo in November and players and staff being paid late in both March and May.

However, the Zwickau-born man had seemingly had enough earlier this summer after the Wednesday were charged by the EFL and given a three-window transfer ban as well as players’ wages not being paid in June.

The German had been linked to a number of vacant jobs in the second tier, including the Leicester City job, and he has not been present at training in the early days of the Owls’ preseason.

Sheffield Wednesday had been training at St. George’s Park as renovations are being made to the club’s training ground on Middlewood Road, though they are due to be back at their traditional training complex on Monday.

Upon hearing that the German manager was looking to return to the club, Owls players were reportedly unhappy at the manner in which he walked away and is now trying to come back.

Röhl is hoping that Monday’s talks will present the playing staff with an opportunity to start afresh as they head into another demanding season in the second tier.

Writer’s View

The situation at Sheffield Wednesday is extremely unorthodox and it is perfectly understandable that individuals are looking to protect themselves even more than they usually would.

Wednesday’s players, and many non-playing staff, are still yet to be paid for July and players could possibly walk free from their contracts in the coming days.

One certainty is that Danny Röhl is one of the best managers in the second tier at the moment. Even if there is a sense of disgruntlement amongst the players, they should move on from it as they could have another season working with an extremely talented coach.

Additionally, Alan Biggs has reported that the club may be in the early stages of a takeover process which would be excellent news for everyone involved with the club.
