Luton Town have confirmed the signing of veteran striker Nahki Wells, as Matt Bloomfield continues to reshape his squad ahead of the 2025/26 season.
The 35-year-old arrives on a free transfer following his departure from Bristol City, where he enjoyed a five-and-a-half-year spell that yielded 48 goals in 237 appearances across all competitions.
Wells was a key figure for City last season, netting ten times and providing vital leadership for one of the Championship’s youngest sides. Off the pitch, his contributions were also recognised when he was named the club’s PFA Community Champion in May 2025.
The Bermudian international boasts a wealth of experience in English football, having scored 174 goals since arriving from his homeland to sign for Carlisle United in 2010. It was at Bradford City that Wells truly made his name, hitting 53 goals in just 112 appearances and helping the Bantams secure promotion from League Two via the 2013 play-offs.
That form earned him a move to Huddersfield Town, where he struck 49 times in 152 games and played a central role in the Terriers’ promotion to the Premier League in 2017.
“Nahki is a proven goalscorer, has fantastic experience and good leadership too,” said Luton boss Matt Bloomfield. “He’s someone with extreme know-how and a real desire to still go and score goals, a real desire to go and achieve something and a real desire to be a part of what we are building.”
Wells later joined Burnley, but struggled to break into the Premier League side and instead enjoyed a prolific loan spell at Queens Park Rangers, notching 20 goals in two seasons before moving to Bristol City in January 2020. Since then, he has been a consistent performer at Championship level and remains a respected presence both on and off the field.
His arrival adds proven pedigree to a Luton side aiming to bounce back after relegation from the Championship, with Bloomfield clearly placing value on leadership and know-how in his summer recruitment.
Writer’s View
This is a clever move by Luton Town. Nahki Wells may be in the latter stages of his career, but his goalscoring instinct and deep knowledge of the Championship make him an ideal addition for a squad that needs guidance and end-product. Bloomfield’s reference to Wells’ “know-how in the penalty area” is telling—it’s not just about raw numbers but positional intelligence, timing, and calmness under pressure.
Luton’s top-flight adventure ended in disappointment, but with players like Wells added to the ranks, the Hatters look well-placed to mount a serious promotion push.
