Colchester United Seal Deal For Premier League Youngster

Colchester United have confirmed the permanent signing of Ben Perry from Nottingham Forest.

The 20-year-old has been a constant in the youth ranks of the Premier League outfit, making over 100 appearances at the under-18 and under-21 levels. He finally made the step up into senior football six months ago, joining League One side Northampton Town on loan, becoming a dependable option for Kevin Nolan’s side.

Move Confirmed

The U’s announced the deal to sign Perry yesterday, making him the third signing for Danny Cowley’s side so far in July. MK Dons‘ Jack Tucker was signed on a free transfer following the expiry of his contract, whilst Oxford United‘s Will Goodwin was loaned in earlier this week.

Speaking to the club about the move to Essex, the defensive midfielder stated:

“It [His time at Northampton] was invaluable. Going there and into a first team changing room and playing men’s football, I’ve learned so much from my time there, and I’m really hoping to kick on even more this season.
“He [Former Colchester loanee Jamie McDonnell] said how, from the start, he felt really welcome by everyone at the club and was speaking about how good the fans were every game. After speaking to him, it really helped me with my decision.”
Danny Cowley’s side are hoping to retain their positive form from the latter stages of last season, which saw them finish 10th in League Two and three points outside of the playoffs.

Writers’ View

With how comfortable he seemed to be at Northampton Town in the midfield, it feels like a slight bit of a coup for Colchester United to sign Ben Perry. Kevin Nolan did speak about bringing him in permanently but The Cobblers opted for different choices, leaving the door open for a new club to sweep in. Colchester, following last season’s drastic improvement and positive outlook under Danny Cowley, may be a good outside shot for automatic promotion this season.
