Walsall Boss Places Faith in Taylor Allen Replacement

Mat Sadler believes Evan Weir is ready to take on a more prominent role this season after an encouraging debut campaign.

The Walsall boss has placed his faith in Weir to step into the void left by Taylor Allen, who completed a summer move to League One side Wycombe Wanderers. Allen, a standout performer for the Saddlers last season, made 119 appearances over three years at the Bescot Stadium and was named Player of the Year after contributing 11 goals and eight assists across all competitions.

Weir Tipped to Fill the Void Left by Player of the Year Allen

While Allen’s departure leaves a significant hole on the left side, Sadler is confident Weir can rise to the challenge. The 22-year-old Irishman, signed from Drogheda United in 2024, managed four assists in 22 appearances during his first season in English football and is now being tipped for a breakthrough year.

Speaking about the defender’s development, Sadler said:

“Without doubt [Weir can succeed Allen]. Evan waited patiently while Taylor showed what he was all about last season, but Evan has an incredible left foot, and it’s a chance for him to stake his claim.”

Weir spent much of last season learning under Allen, and while he was often second choice, his performances when called upon were composed and progressive. His ability to deliver from deep and contribute in the final third has not gone unnoticed, and with a full pre-season ahead, he is well placed to compete for a regular starting berth.

Walsall are currently preparing for another campaign in League Two, aiming to improve on a 10th-place finish last term. Allen’s exit was anticipated, with his contract running down and interest from higher-tier clubs inevitable after a stellar season. For Weir, this is the perfect moment to transition from promising squad member to key first-team regular.

Sadler’s backing sends a strong message ahead of the 2025/26 season—Walsall are committed to developing from within, and Weir now has a clear opportunity to make the left-back spot his own. His progress could prove crucial as the club looks to challenge for a top-seven finish and push for promotion.

Writer’s View

Replacing a player like Taylor Allen is never easy, but Evan Weir has shown enough glimpses to suggest he’s ready for the challenge. His left foot is indeed a weapon, and with Allen no longer in his way, Weir has both the platform and the pressure that often breeds growth. Mat Sadler has made it clear that the future at Walsall includes players like Weir—and this season could be the one that defines the next stage of his career.
