Plymouth Argyle Confirm Capture Of Championship Midfielder

Plymouth Argyle have confirmed the signing of Ayman Benarous on a free transfer, with the former Bristol City prospect penning a one-year deal following a successful trial.

Benarous had been without a club since his release from Bristol City at the end of June, but impressed Tom Cleverley and his coaching staff during training and will now link up with the League One side for the 2025/26 season. The versatile midfielder, who can also operate in defensive areas, had endured a difficult few years at Ashton Gate due to two serious injuries, but has now returned to full fitness.

Argyle head coach Tom Cleverley welcomed the signing, saying:

“Ayman is a young player with brilliant potential and has impressed us all since he came in to train with the squad. He was highly thought of at Bristol City but unfortunately had bad luck with injuries. He’s shown everyone here during the last week the talent he has at his disposal.”

Having joined Bristol City’s academy at the age of six, Benarous made 11 senior appearances for the Robins between 2021 and 2025. He made his debut in a Championship win against Barnsley and later featured in the FA Cup against Fulham, but did not play a first-team game after the 2021/22 season due to injury setbacks.

Despite interest from other clubs, Benarous opted for a fresh start at Home Park. Argyle’s Head of Football Operations David Fox highlighted his adaptability and readiness to contribute, stating:

“Ayman will add real versatility to the squad as he can play in several positions across the midfield but also in defensive areas as well. It is great to get another player through the door so early in pre-season.”

Benarous has joined the squad for their warm-weather training camp in Austria and could feature in upcoming friendlies as he looks to re-establish his career at League One level.

Writer’s View

This could be a shrewd pick-up by Plymouth Argyle. Ayman Benarous was once one of the most highly regarded prospects in Bristol City’s academy and looked set for a breakout before injury halted his progress. That he’s now fit again, still just 21, and eager to make up for lost time makes him an intriguing addition.

Argyle have secured him on low risk terms, and if he rediscovers his form, it could prove one of the most astute signings of their summer. His ability to slot into multiple midfield and defensive roles will also be a valuable asset to Cleverley in what promises to be a demanding League One campaign.
