Leyton Orient have made a major statement in the League One market by securing the return of Idris El Mizouni for a club-record fee.
The 24-year-old midfielder rejoins from Championship side Oxford United on a three-year deal, having previously made 89 appearances during two loan stints with the O’s.

El Mizouni was a key part of Orient’s League Two title-winning campaign in 2022/23 and was named in the division’s Team of the Season for his standout performances at the heart of midfield. His blend of tenacity, intelligence, and technical quality quickly earned him cult-hero status among the Brisbane Road faithful.
The transfer signals Leyton Orient’s intent to compete higher up the League One table this season, with Director of Football Martin Ling describing the move as a “statement signing.”
“Ever since Idris first walked through the door here, we wanted to say he was a permanent Leyton Orient player,” said Ling. “We all know how much of a fan favourite Idris is, and to secure him on a three-year contract is a big statement from the club.”
El Mizouni, who featured for Oxford last season following his departure from Ipswich Town, admitted he was delighted to be returning to a club where he felt truly at home.
“When I first came here, I was a young man, and I feel like I grew up a lot here, as a player and as a man,” he said. “Everything about the club, from the coaches, players and fans, is special. It’s a family club, and that’s what I want and need.”
Manager Richie Wellens was equally enthusiastic, calling the midfielder one of the best in the division and praising the timing of the signing ahead of pre-season preparations.
“For me, he is one of the best midfielders in this league,” said Wellens. “His experience and profile suit what we are building here. We know what we’re getting, and we know how much the fans love him.”

Leyton Orient fans have every reason to be excited. Idris El Mizouni’s return is not just a nostalgic signing—it’s a strategic one. At 24, he is entering his prime and already has a proven understanding of how Richie Wellens wants his side to play.
Breaking the club’s transfer record to secure a player who fits so seamlessly into the team dynamic shows ambition and trust in continuity. With stability behind the scenes and a midfield general back in red, Orient are well-positioned to push on in 2025/26.
