Former Walsall and Mansfield Town Man Finds New Employer

Hartlepool United’s rebuild under Simon Grayson continued this week with the signing of Danny Johnson, a familiar name to supporters.

The 32-year-old was part of the club’s youth ranks and now returns to the North East after a productive spell at Walsall.

Football League Experience

Johnson scored 29 goals in 88 appearances during two stints at the Bescot Stadium, including eight in 30 games last season. His Football League experience spans spells with Mansfield Town, Leyton Orient and Gateshead, and his arrival is expected to ease the burden on star striker Mani Dieseruvwe—if the club manage to retain him.

Dieseruvwe, who has scored 43 goals in 89 appearances, is being heavily linked with a move to fellow National League side Rochdale. With uncertainty surrounding his future, Johnson’s arrival brings vital security to the Pools’ attack heading into the new campaign.

The move marks Grayson’s fourth addition since taking charge last month, and his first frontline signing after reinforcing other areas of the squad.

“His record speaks for itself—over 200 career goals is testament to his overall ability,” said Grayson. “His experience, know-how and ultimately his goalscoring capabilities are going to be a great addition to the squad we are building.”

Johnson also spoke positively about returning to familiar surroundings, highlighting his past connection with the club.

“I am delighted to sign for Hartlepool United,” he told the club’s official website. “It is a club with high ambitions and I can’t wait to get going in the blue and white shirt I remember fondly as a youth player.”

Writer’s View

This signing ticks a lot of boxes for Hartlepool United. Danny Johnson offers proven output at both League Two and National League level, and with Mani Dieseruvwe’s future uncertain, he adds important depth and experience. His local ties to the club help too—Johnson will understand the expectations and energy of playing for Pools.

For Simon Grayson, it’s another step in quietly building a competitive squad ahead of what will be a demanding season. The attacking unit still needs clarity—especially with Rochdale circling—but this move shows the club is acting decisively and pragmatically in the market.
