Plymouth Argyle Plotting Move For £250,000 Striker

Plymouth Argyle are targeting a summer swoop for Burton Albion striker Rumarn Burrell as manager Tom Cleverley looks to bolster his attacking options, as reported by Football League World.

The Pilgrims are preparing for life back in League One following relegation from the Championship and are wasting no time reshaping the squad, with the £250,000-rated striker on their hitlist.

Burrell in Plymouth’s Sights After Standout Season

Burrell, 24, is understood to be on Plymouth’s radar after netting 11 goals in 34 appearances for Burton Albion during the 2024/25 campaign. His current deal at the Pirelli Stadium runs until 2027, having only joined the Brewers last summer on a free transfer from Cove Rangers.

A Jamaican international and former Grimsby Town academy graduate, Burrell previously spent time at Middlesbrough between 2019 and 2022. While he didn’t break into the senior setup at the Riverside, he enjoyed productive spells in the youth ranks and had loan stints with Bradford City and Kilmarnock before moving north of the border.

His 24 goals in 42 appearances for Cove Rangers during the 2023/24 season caught the attention of several clubs, with Burton ultimately securing his signature. One year later, his form in the third tier has made him an appealing option for a Plymouth side in need of proven firepower.

The departure of key attackers Mustapha Bundu and Ryan Hardie has left the Pilgrims light up front. While the recent arrival of Owen Oseni adds depth, the former St Mirren loanee remains unproven in the EFL. Burrell, by contrast, brings league experience and a recent track record of consistent output.

Tom Cleverley’s early business has already seen Bradley Ibrahim, Caleb Watts, Jamie Paterson and Oseni arrive at Home Park. The potential signing of Burrell would continue that trend of recruiting younger players with scope for development, but who are already capable of delivering at League One level.

Writer’s View

Rumarn Burrell would be a smart pick-up for Plymouth. He’s in the right age bracket, is physically well suited to the EFL, and has demonstrated a growing maturity in front of goal. Importantly, he’s already proven himself in this division, something that can’t be said for all of Argyle’s summer recruits so far.

With Cleverley needing to reshape both identity and personnel following relegation, this looks like the sort of deal that could offer immediate reward and long-term value. Burton may be reluctant sellers, but if the price is right, this could be one of the shrewdest moves of the League One summer.
