Aaron Ramsey has made history by completing a move to Mexican side Pumas UNAM, becoming the first high-profile British player to sign for a club in Liga MX.
The former Arsenal midfielder departs Cardiff City to pursue one final chapter in his playing career, with hopes of leading Wales into the 2026 World Cup.
Ramsey Embarks on Historic Mexican Move
Pumas UNAM have officially announced the signing of 34-year-old Ramsey on a one-year deal, marking a significant moment in both the club’s modern history and that of British footballers abroad. The move sees the Welsh captain continue his career in Mexico City, joining a club with a rich heritage in Latin America’s top domestic competition.
The switch comes just weeks after Ramsey completed a short spell as interim manager at Cardiff City, stepping in for the final three games of the 2024/25 Championship campaign following Omer Riza’s dismissal. Despite Cardiff’s relegation to League One, Ramsey was considered for the permanent role but ultimately chose to continue playing.
In a statement on social media, Ramsey said he was leaving Cardiff “with a lot of different emotions,” adding:
“For now I am on a new adventure but I will be keeping a close eye on the club as always and it will forever have my support.”
Pumas welcomed the midfielder with a glowing message:
“Your name has shone on the world’s biggest stages. Wales national team. Captain and emblem of his national team. And right now, your talent and passion wear blue and gold… This is your new home. Welcome to Ciudad Universitaria, welcome to Pumas.”
Ramsey brings a glittering CV with him to Mexico. He spent 11 years at Arsenal after joining from Cardiff in 2008, going on to win multiple FA Cups. Subsequent spells at Juventus, Rangers, and OGC Nice followed, before returning to his boyhood club in 2023. His international record remains equally impressive, with 83 caps and 21 goals for Wales, including a recent strike against Panama in the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
Writer’s View
This is a groundbreaking move not just for Aaron Ramsey, but for British footballers considering non-traditional destinations. While many opt for the MLS or Middle East late in their careers, Ramsey’s choice of Mexico offers a refreshing twist. It’s an ambitious decision from a player who clearly still believes he has something to offer.
For Pumas, this is a marquee signing — a leader, a technician, and a globally recognised figure who could inspire both fans and teammates. If he can stay fit, Ramsey might just thrive in the blue and gold of Mexico’s capital.
