Accrington Stanley stalwart Seamus Conneely has signed a one-year extension for the club, making it his 12th season in Lancashire.
The 36-year-old joined The ‘Owd Reds in July 2015 on a free transfer after leaving League of Ireland side Sligo Rovers, and has become an icon in Accrington, amassing 378 appearances for the side. He made 30 of those last season, scoring once against Doncaster Rovers in the league before having his season cut short due to an injury against Bromley.
Accrington Link Continues
It is the second contract John Doolan’s side have agreed to in as many days, with fellow midfielder Dan Martin also agreeing to a new deal at the Wham Stadium, also for an additional year. Speaking about his own renewal, Conneely said to club media:
“Discussions were ongoing over the summer – my family are very settled in the area and I wanted to stay, I want to be here for the long term and I see my future here at this club, as it means a lot to me and my family.
“We were able to come to an agreement, which is pleasing for me and my family, and we are looking forward to the season ahead.
“If I was to break 400 [appearances] it would mean I have had a good season fitness-wise and performance-wise to maintain my place in the team – that is a little goal, I would like to get to that 400 mark for sure.”

Having someone who is adored by fans and players alike as well as being a club icon in their own right renew a contract is always a big lift. Seamus Conneely has been Mr. Consistent for his side across his 11 years at the club so far, and despite last season’s injury setback, will have a lot to contribute going into next season. He will likely miss the early stages of preseason and the league campaign itself but should have a major impact on how Accrington Stanley respond to last season’s low of 21st place.
