Northampton Town have completed the signing of former Derby County midfielder Tyrese Fornah, beating off competition to secure his signature.
The 25-year-old joins the Cobblers on a three-year deal following his release by the newly promoted Rams.
Nolan Gets His Man as Fornah Commits to Northampton
Fornah becomes the ninth signing of the summer for manager Kevin Nolan, underlining the ambition at Sixfields as the club reshapes its squad for the upcoming League One campaign. The versatile midfielder spent last season on loan at Salford City, where he played 43 matches in all competitions.
Standing at 6ft 1in, Fornah typically operates in a holding role but is comfortable further forward when required. Born in London, his youth development included spells with Reading and Brighton & Hove Albion before turning professional with Nottingham Forest. He made his debut in an FA Cup tie against Chelsea in 2020.
After a brief stint on loan with Portuguese side Casa Pia, Fornah returned to England to join Plymouth Argyle in October 2020. His 39 appearances for the Pilgrims were followed by further loans at Shrewsbury Town and Reading, where he featured regularly in the Championship.
Derby County secured his services in 2023, and he contributed 23 appearances as the club earned promotion from League One in 2023/24. Despite helping in their return to the Championship, Fornah was loaned out for the 2024/25 season and did not feature in Paul Warne’s long-term plans.
Fornah also earned his first senior international call-up in November 2023, appearing for Sierra Leone in World Cup qualifiers against Ethiopia and Egypt. His arrival at Northampton represents a significant coup for the club, particularly given the level of interest from elsewhere.
Writer’s View
This signing shows real intent from Kevin Nolan and Northampton Town. Tyrese Fornah has a pedigree that suggests he should be playing at a higher level, with Championship experience and over 40 games last season in a competitive League Two campaign. He adds physicality, composure, and versatility to the Cobblers’ midfield.
With a strong pre-season and a clear role under Nolan, Fornah could quickly establish himself as a central figure in a side looking to push up the League One table. For a free transfer, this has the potential to be one of the bargains of the summer.
