Shrewsbury Town have strengthened their defence with the signing of former Bradford City centre-back Sam Stubbs.
The 26-year-old arrives at the Croud Meadow on a free transfer after being released by the Bantams earlier this summer.

Stubbs spent the 2024/25 campaign on loan at Cheltenham Town, where he impressed across more than 40 appearances. His consistency at the heart of the defence attracted widespread interest, but it is Shrewsbury Town who have secured his signature on a two-year deal.
Speaking to club media, Director of Football Micky Moore highlighted the importance of bringing in a defender with leadership credentials and proven League One pedigree.
“He’s a defender who had a lot of interest this summer following what was an excellent season for him personally at Cheltenham,” said Moore. “I think we have signed a talented defender hitting his prime – he is a leader, he’s strong in the air and is physically strong. He is an all-round good defender.”
Stubbs began his youth career at Everton before turning professional with Wigan Athletic. He gained early experience on loan at Crewe Alexandra and FC Fylde before moving on permanently to Middlesbrough. Stints with Fleetwood Town and Exeter City followed, and he joined Bradford City in 2023.
Although he featured sporadically for the Bantams, it was at Cheltenham where he found his form, helping the Robins remain competitive during a difficult season.
His arrival represents an early signal of intent from Shrewsbury, who are looking to rebuild after a transitional campaign under head coach Paul Hurst. With Moore now overseeing recruitment, this summer could prove pivotal in shaping a new-look squad capable of climbing the League One table.
