Swindon Town are closing in on a permanent move for Grimsby Town winger Charles Vernam as Ian Holloway looks to add width to his attacking options.
The 28-year-old is understood to be a key target for the Robins, with a deal expected to progress ahead of pre-season training. He has previously featured in League One for hometown club Lincoln City, and Burton Albion.
Holloway Eyes Reunion With Familiar Face
Vernam, who previously played under Holloway during the manager’s time at Grimsby, is seen as a natural fit for Swindon’s revamped front line. Despite making just 17 appearances in each of the last two seasons due to injuries, his performances during Holloway’s initial spell with The Mariners left a lasting impression. That period also included a stunning solo goal against Colchester United, later crowned EFL Goal of the Season, which earned him a move to Burton Albion.
Since then, Vernam has had spells with Bradford City and Lincoln City, before returning to Blundell Park in June 2023 on a three-year deal. However, he now appears to be surplus to requirements under manager Dave Artell, who is prioritising durability and consistency ahead of the new League Two campaign.
With one year left on his contract, any deal will require a transfer fee, though sources close to both clubs suggest it is unlikely to be a significant amount.
Swindon’s transfer business so far has been aggressive, with Holloway addressing several areas of the squad early. However, the wide areas remain relatively understocked, with only Botan Ameen, Danny Butterworth, and Paul Glatzel listed as senior wingers—none of whom are out-and-out wide men. Vernam’s direct style, which sees him take on defenders and get shots and crosses away, could provide the natural width Swindon have been lacking.
Frustrating Season For Vernam
Statistically, despite a frustrating run of injuries, Vernam still posts impressive metrics. Last season, he ranked in the 94th percentile for shots per 90 minutes among League Two wingers, 87th percentile for chances created, and 74th percentile for cross accuracy. He also ranked highly for touches in the opposition box (80th percentile), highlighting his ability to make an impact when fit.
Writer’s View
This would be a smart piece of business by Swindon Town. Charles Vernam may not have had the best luck with injuries recently, but his quality—especially in a Holloway system—is proven. The Robins need width, and Vernam offers it in abundance.
His familiarity with the manager and a style that suits League Two could make this one of the more quietly effective signings of the summer, provided the club manage his fitness carefully. A low-risk gamble with high upside.
