Chesterfield have confirmed the arrivals of Adam Lewis and Ryan Stirk as manager Paul Cook continues to reshape his squad ahead of their League Two return.
Both players arrive on free transfers, strengthening the Spireites’ defensive and midfield options in what is shaping up to be a busy summer at the SMH Group Stadium.
League Experience Bolsters Chesterfield’s Squad
Adam Lewis, a versatile full-back, joins from Morecambe after making 52 appearances last season in a campaign that ended in relegation for the Shrimpers. Despite the team’s struggles, Lewis contributed one goal and seven assists and was a rare bright spot in a difficult year. Having started his career at Liverpool, where he made his senior debut in the FA Cup against Shrewsbury Town, the 25-year-old has gained valuable experience through loan spells at Plymouth Argyle, Newport County, Livingston, Amiens, and Notts County.
“I’m just delighted to get it over the line,” Lewis told the club website. “I know a lot about this club, I know the manager and Gary Roberts really well. I played against Chesterfield last year when I was at Morecambe – they’re a great team and I think the way they play suits me.”
Lewis also boasts an extensive international youth résumé, having represented England at U16, U17, U19 and U20 level. His arrival adds depth and versatility to the left side of Cook’s team, with his ability to push forward and deliver from wide areas likely to suit Chesterfield’s attacking approach.
Ryan Stirk Arrives
Joining Lewis at the club is 24-year-old midfielder Ryan Stirk, who arrives following the expiry of his contract at Walsall. The Birmingham-born midfielder made 97 appearances across two seasons with the Saddlers and was a key part of their journey to the League Two play-off final in 2024/25.
“It’s nice to get it done,” said Stirk after finalising the move. “As soon as I spoke to the gaffer, we got on straight away. His style of play matches how I want to play.”
Stirk came through the academy at Birmingham City, where he signed professional terms in 2020, and gained first-team experience through loan spells with Mansfield Town and Bromley before joining Walsall in 2023. Like Lewis, he also has international pedigree, having featured for Wales from U16 through to U21 level.
These additions mark Chesterfield’s second and third signings of the summer window as they prepare for life back in the EFL, having won promotion from the National League last season.
Writer’s View
Chesterfield’s business so far reflects a smart blend of youth, experience and pedigree. Both Lewis and Stirk bring proven League Two quality, with the added benefit of having come through elite academy systems at Liverpool and Birmingham respectively.
Paul Cook is clearly intent on building a squad capable of competing, not just surviving, in the fourth tier—and with these additions, he’s off to a solid start.
