Oldham Athletic have secured the return of forward Kane Drummond on a permanent deal following his release from Chesterfield.
The 24-year-old has signed a one-year contract with an option for a further season, becoming the club’s second signing in as many days.
Drummond Returns To Boundary Park With A Point To Prove
Drummond spent a brief loan spell at Oldham last season, making a strong impression despite limited appearances. Initially set to remain until the New Year, he was recalled early by Chesterfield due to an injury crisis at the SMH Group Stadium. Now, with his contract at the Spireites expired, Micky Mellon has moved swiftly to bring him back to Boundary Park on a full-time basis.
The former Macclesfield Town and Liverpool academy player is known for his pace, directness and versatility in the final third. He is capable of playing off either wing or in a central attacking role—traits that appeal to Mellon, who is rebuilding Oldham’s attack ahead of their return to League Two.
“Kane is a young player with real talent and potential,” said Mellon. “He’s quick, direct and gives us something different in the wide areas. He’s hungry to kick on at this level and show what he’s about, and we’re delighted to bring him in.”
National League Loan Stint
Drummond featured seven times in the National League during his loan stint, and made three additional appearances in the FA Cup, including matches against Halifax Town, Tranmere Rovers and Leyton Orient. Despite his brief stay, he impressed with his work rate and willingness to take on defenders—qualities that endeared him to both fans and coaching staff.
Speaking after signing his deal, Drummond said: “I’m buzzing to be here. Oldham’s a massive club with big ambitions and I’m excited to be part of that. I loved my time here, so to come back was an easy decision.”
Having fallen short in their quest for an EFL return in recent years, Latics are banking on continuity and character—qualities Drummond appears to embody—as they gear up for a critical League Two campaign.
Writer’s View
Kane Drummond’s permanent move to Oldham makes perfect sense. He fits the club’s style, knows the environment, and adds a spark to their attacking options. Importantly, it’s a low-risk move with clear upside.
If Mellon can help unlock the potential that once made Drummond a standout at Macclesfield, this could prove to be a very shrewd signing indeed—especially in a division where pace and directness often separate promotion hopefuls from the pack.
