Lincoln City Fend Off Premier League Interest For Emerging Talent

Lincoln City have secured the future of one of their brightest young stars as winger Zane Okoro signs his first professional deal.

The 18-year-old has penned a two-year contract with an option for a further year following a breakthrough 2024/25 campaign. His capture comes in the face of interest from AFC Bournemouth and Fulham, both of whom were keen to add him to their youth ranks.

Impressive Rise Through the Ranks

Okoro’s elevation into the senior setup comes after a scholarship spell that saw him fast-tracked into first-team contention. The pacey wide man made four senior appearances during the season, having impressed head coach Michael Skubala and the coaching staff in training and cup competitions.

He was handed his debut in the Emirates FA Cup clash against Chesham United, before netting in his first start just days later against Manchester City U21s in the Vertu Motors Trophy. He also featured as a substitute in League One outings against Shrewsbury Town and Wrexham, underlining the confidence the staff already have in his ability.

Skubala hailed the teenager’s development, saying:

“Zane is a talented young player, with an elite mentality, who has developed over the past 12 months through exposure to the first team training environment as well as the work of the Academy staff. He has impressed everyone and showed glimpses of the attributes we want in his position during his first team appearances last season.

“Zane is way ahead of schedule in his development but the really hard work and biggest challenge, of transitioning from youth to senior football, are still to come. We will find the appropriate pathways and opportunities for him and support him with the inevitable bumps in the road.”

The contract is a reward not just for his on-field promise but also for his attitude off it, with his maturity and willingness to learn frequently cited by those behind the scenes at the LNER Stadium.

Writer’s View

Okoro’s rise reflects Lincoln City’s continued emphasis on youth development, with his contract a clear signal that the club trusts its own pathway. While four appearances might seem modest, his involvement in crucial matchday squads throughout the season shows he is already seen as a viable first-team option.

His next step will likely involve carefully managed minutes—possibly via cup competitions or a loan move—to aid his transition. With a strong support system in place and clear backing from the club’s hierarchy, Okoro looks well-placed to become the next Academy graduate to make a lasting impact at Sincil Bank.
