Blackpool Chasing Championship Midfielder

League One side Blackpool are one of many clubs chasing Millwall midfielder George Honeyman.

The out-of-contract midfielder has been offered a new deal at the Den, as per Millwall’s retained list, but it’s understood many clubs, including the Tangerines, are interested in signing the 30-year-old.

Blackpool are looking to strengthen their squad further ahead of Steve Bruce’s first full season in charge at Bloomfield Road.

George Honeyman’s Career So Far

Honeyman rose through the youth system at Sunderland and went on to make nearly 100 appearances, scoring 15 goals and providing a further five assists for the club during his four years as a professional.

He joined Hull City for a six-figure fee in 2019, where he spent the next three years of his career, making 127 appearances in all competitions, providing 10 goals and 23 assists in his time at the MKM Stadium.

A move to East London then followed in 2022, where he has remained since. Honeyman has made 117 appearances in three seasons at Millwall, 45 of which came last season.

With so much Championship and League One experience, it’s no wonder multiple sides are after the 30-year-old.

Blackpool’s Rebuild

One of the clubs named in the chase for the midfielder is League One side Blackpool, who have already made some smart moves this summer.

The club have already brought in the likes of centre-backs Fraser Horsfall and Michael Ihiekwe, but have lost versatile Sonny Carey to now Championship side Charlton Athletic, meaning they need a new attacking midfielder.

It seems like they’ve turned their attention to Honeyman, who is a proven player in the third tier, winning the title with the Tigers in the 2020/21 season.

Although a new contract is on the table at the Den, Bruce will be hoping he can lure the 30-year-old to Blackpool, as the Tangerines look towards promotion back to the second tier after suffering relegation in 2023.

Although early business doesn’t automatically mean good business, but the two signings the club have already made signal their early ambition.

Writer’s View

Securing a deal for Honeyman would certainly be a coup for Bruce and his Blackpool squad. With two signings already through the door, some may see the side as early League One favourites in a league that is certainly weaker than last season’s.

From Millwall’s perspective, losing such an experienced midfielder for nothing would certainly be a blow for Alex Neil’s side, who will be looking to push for promotion in the second tier after narrowly missing out on play-off football on the last day of the season in their last campaign.
