Blackpool have joined the race to sign experienced centre-back Michael Ihiekwe after his departure from Sheffield Wednesday.
The Seasiders are looking to bolster their defensive ranks ahead of the 2025/26 campaign and see the veteran defender as a valuable addition.
League One Clubs Circle As Ihiekwe Eyes Next Step
Ihiekwe, 32, is attracting strong interest from across the EFL following confirmation he will leave Hillsborough this summer. The defender, who played a vital role in Wednesday’s 2021/22 promotion campaign, has emerged as a serious target for several League One clubs—including Steve Bruce’s Blackpool.
Ihiekwe joined Wednesday in 2022 as part of a double swoop from Rotherham United alongside striker Michael Smith. Though injuries and form limited his involvement at times, the Liverpudlian re-established himself in the second half of the 2024/25 season, earning praise from Owls boss Danny Röhl for his composure and adaptability.
Despite a strong finish to the campaign, Ihiekwe’s contract was not renewed at Hillsborough. Released earlier this month, he is now one of the most experienced free agents available in League One, having earned promotion from the division on three separate occasions.

Serious Contenders
Blackpool are understood to be among the most serious suitors. Steve Bruce, who returned to management with the Tangerines earlier this year, is seeking defensive stability after a transitional season. Ihiekwe’s ability to operate in a high-pressure environment and lead from the back makes him a compelling option as Bruce looks to build a promotion-challenging squad.
Port Vale, now managed by Darren Moore—who initially signed Ihiekwe for Wednesday—are also interested, as are Huddersfield Town and at least one unnamed Championship outfit. However, Blackpool’s ambition and Bruce’s presence could give them the edge in negotiations.
Ihiekwe was nominated as Championship Player of the Month for March and is widely respected for his leadership qualities and calmness under pressure. His next move is expected to be finalised ahead of pre-season, with clubs keen to add his experience to their squads early in the summer window.
Writer’s View
This would be a smart piece of business for Blackpool. Steve Bruce knows the value of an experienced head at the back, and Ihiekwe brings with him promotion pedigree and calm authority—two things the Seasiders were short on last season.
While Port Vale and Huddersfield may provide competition, Blackpool’s infrastructure and ambition should make them frontrunners. If they can get this deal over the line, it could prove a pivotal signing in their push for the Championship.
