Millwall Reward Alex Neil For Fine Form

Millwall have rewarded head coach Alex Neil for his fine start at the club by giving him a new contract.

The 43-year-old only arrived at The Den at the end of December, his first job since departing Stoke City a year prior. He was handed the reins from Neil Harris, who stepped down from the role following a six-game winless run.

Neil endured a difficult start and failed to pick up a victory from his first four outings. However, he recovered to put the Lions into play-off contention, only to miss out on the final day following a 3-1 defeat against promoted Burnley.

The former Sunderland boss had already committed to a ‘long term’ deal upon his arrival, with Millwall confirming his fresh terms will keep him at the club ‘for the foreseeable future’.

Neil Hails ‘Special’ Club

Neil has won over many admirers amongst the Millwall fanbase during his short stint in the capital. Upon the announcement, the head coach revealed his delight whilst also hailing the club as ‘special’:

“Since my first day, the commitment and togetherness I’ve seen from everyone at the club – players, staff, and fans – has been really special. That unity has helped us build strong foundations for the seasons ahead, and to be a part of that journey is incredibly exciting.

“I’ve said it many times: this club is special. It’s only when you truly experience the work going on behind the scenes, speak with the fans, and work alongside the players and staff day in and day out, that you realise just how unique it really is.

“In the second half of the season, we all shared some memorable moments together, and that just motivates us all to keep pushing forward and continue striving for success.

“Finally, I’d like to thank the chairman, James Berylson, and Director of Football, Steve Gallen, for their continued support.”

Writer’s View

Alex Neil appears to have found a home at Millwall and one where he can be left to thrive. The Lions have long harboured ambitions of reaching the Premier League and they clearly feel that the Scot is the man who can deliver just that. They came agonisingly close to reaching the play-offs last season and were perhaps unlucky to face a Burnley team which hit 100 points on the final day. A victory at Turf Moor would have seen them sneak into the top six, but they will be confident they can take that extra step next season.
