Harrogate Town have bolstered their attacking options by signing former Bristol City striker Shawn McCoulsky on a two-year deal.
The 28-year-old returns to the EFL after an impressive spell with Maidenhead United, where he netted 18 goals in the 2024–25 National League campaign.
Harrogate Add Firepower With Experienced Frontman
McCoulsky arrives at Wetherby Road as Harrogate look to bounce back from a disappointing campaign. The former Colchester United forward brings a wealth of experience across the lower leagues and a proven eye for goal. He becomes a key addition for manager Simon Weaver, who will hope the forward’s form in non-league football can translate to League Two success.
“I’m delighted, as soon as the interest came, I knew it was the right thing for me,” McCoulsky told the club’s official website. “I spoke to the manager about the direction the club is going in and the project here and it was definitely a no-brainer. Everyone I spoke to had nothing but good things to say about the club and that made my decision a lot easier.”
A product of Dulwich Hamlet’s Aspire Academy, McCoulsky had early loan spells with Walton Casuals and Weston-super-Mare before earning a professional contract with Bristol City in 2015. He made his senior debut for the Robins in 2016 and gained recognition during a string of loan moves, including a standout spell at Newport County where he famously scored an FA Cup winner against Leeds United in 2018.
After time at Southend United and Forest Green Rovers—where he signed permanently in 2019—McCoulsky drifted into the National League. Following short stints with Bromley, FC Halifax Town, and Colchester United, he settled at Maidenhead United in 2022. Over three seasons, he became a consistent presence in Alan Devonshire’s squad, scoring 32 goals in 130 appearances and playing a pivotal role in keeping the club afloat.
Head of Recruitment Lloyd Kerry said:
“He’ll add pace to the top end of the pitch, he’s a big strong lad that can affect the first ball and scored some really good goals last season that caught our eye.”
McCoulsky’s arrival reflects a clear emphasis on attacking reinforcement for Harrogate, who struggled in front of goal last term. His proven scoring record at National League level and vast experience across the EFL make him a smart addition to the squad.

Writer’s View
Shawn McCoulsky might not have found a long-term home in the Football League before, but his exploits with Maidenhead show he has matured into a reliable and dangerous forward. Harrogate’s pressing style and commitment to high-tempo football should suit his attributes, particularly his pace and ability to capitalise on defensive lapses. If he hits the ground running, this could be one of the more astute under-the-radar moves of the League Two summer window.
