Swansea City have won the race to sign in-demand centre-back Ricardo Santos after his Bolton Wanderers exit.
The experienced defender has agreed a deal to become Alan Sheehan’s third summer signing, snubbing rival interest to join the Championship outfit.
Santos Chooses Swansea Over Other Suitors
Santos is set to link up with the Swans following his release from the Toughsheet Community Stadium, in a move that marks a significant coup for the Welsh club. The 29-year-old was courted by several sides domestically and abroad, but Swansea have moved swiftly to wrap up a full agreement, according to Football Insider.
Santos made over 200 appearances across five seasons with Bolton, where he captained the team, won promotions, and earned multiple selections in the EFL and PFA Teams of the Year. His leadership credentials and commanding presence at the back were recognised again in 2023, when he helped guide Bolton to EFL Trophy success with a thumping 4–0 win over Plymouth Argyle.
The former Barnet and Peterborough United defender joins Alan Sheehan’s squad as the manager looks to build momentum after a mid-table finish in 2024–25. Sheehan was confirmed as permanent manager in April and has wasted no time shaping his team, with Santos following Bobby Wales and Zeidane Inoussa through the door.
Born in Portugal but of Cape Verdean descent, Santos was recently called up by Cape Verde for international duty, highlighting the continued recognition of his quality on a broader stage.
Santos’ football journey has taken him from non-league beginnings at Thurrock and Dover Athletic to the Championship and beyond. His rise saw him picked up by Peterborough United in 2014, before spells at Barnet and Bolton, where he firmly established himself as one of the EFL’s standout defenders. He was named Player of the Year for the Trotters in their 2020–21 promotion season and held the armband until late 2024.
