Mansfield Town Miss Out As Reported Target Joins League One Rivals

Mansfield Town have missed out on one of their summer transfer targets after Jordan Gabriel joined Port Vale.

The Stags were reportedly in the hunt for the experienced wing-back, but he has opted to move to Vale Park on a two-year deal.

Clough Misses Out As Port Vale Land Key Target

Nigel Clough’s Stags had been linked with a move for Gabriel, who was released by Blackpool following the 2024/25 campaign. The 26-year-old made 37 appearances last season for the Seasiders and had attracted attention from multiple EFL clubs, including Lincoln City and Northampton Town.

However, it is newly-promoted Port Vale who have won the race for Gabriel’s signature, making him their first signing since securing a return to League One. His addition will bring a wealth of experience to the Valiants, with the former Nottingham Forest youngster having previously featured in both the Championship and League One.

Port Vale manager Darren Moore expressed his satisfaction at securing Gabriel’s services, saying:

“We are absolutely delighted that Jordan is joining us and are looking forward to welcoming him into the group ahead of pre-season. He’s a player we have watched and admired for some time, and his experience at Championship and League One level will be really valuable to us.”

The decision is a blow to Clough, who is aiming to rebuild his Mansfield squad following another near-miss in their promotion push last season. Gabriel’s versatility as a right-back and wing-back would have added depth and proven quality to a defensive line that struggled with consistency at times.

Mansfield are expected to continue their search for defensive reinforcements in the coming weeks as they look to mount another challenge in League One. Gabriel’s decision to join Port Vale highlights the competitive nature of the transfer market, particularly for free agents with Football League pedigree.

Vale, for their part, are signalling their intent to consolidate their position in the third tier after a strong finish to the 2024/25 season. The club’s swift action in the market suggests further additions could be imminent as they aim to build on their promotion momentum.

Writer’s View

This is a clear statement from Port Vale, and a frustration for Nigel Clough. Gabriel’s proven ability at higher levels would have made him a coup for Mansfield, particularly as a free agent. Clough now faces the challenge of finding an alternative who can bring similar quality and experience.

For Gabriel, the decision to join a League One side fresh from promotion seems a logical step, but it leaves Mansfield again watching a key target slip through their fingers. With pre-season looming, the pressure is on the Stags to find answers in the market—and fast.
