Stockport County Transfer Blow: 28-Year-Old Rejects Edgeley Park

Fraser Horsfall has rejected fresh terms at Stockport County to join League One rivals Blackpool on a four-year deal, in what many see as a statement signing by Steve Bruce’s side.

The commanding centre-back will officially become a Tangerines player on 1 July following the expiry of his Edgeley Park contract.

Horsfall Eyes Promotion After Surprise Switch

Horsfall, 28, has been a key figure for Stockport since arriving from Northampton Town in 2022, playing a central role in their promotion from League Two and helping them finish third in League One last season. He made 122 appearances in all competitions for County and was a regular starter under Dave Challinor.

Despite Stockport’s desire to keep him, the former club captain opted for a new challenge at Bloomfield Road. His switch reunites him with experienced manager Steve Bruce, who is hoping to guide Blackpool back to the Championship after a mid-table finish last season.

“I’m buzzing to have got the deal done as it has happened quite quickly,” Horsfall told Blackpool’s club website. “With the size of this club they shouldn’t be in this league, so the main goal is promotion.”

Bruce was equally enthusiastic about the addition, praising the defender’s leadership and consistency:

“Fraser arrives following an excellent season that’s made him highly sought after this summer. We’re delighted to get someone of Fraser’s calibre signed early as he demonstrates the leadership qualities we’re looking for to compete at the top end of this division.”

Stockport Disappointment

Stockport County’s director of football Simon Wilson expressed disappointment but respect for the player’s decision, stating the club would now turn its attention to existing talent and new opportunities.

“Fraser has been a brilliant player for us and a big part of the club’s recent success. However, as we have seen before, in these situations all parties move on quickly,” Wilson told the club’s official site.

Horsfall, who previously made 100 appearances for Northampton and began his career at Huddersfield Town, is expected to add both experience and defensive stability to a Blackpool side aiming for an immediate play-off push.

Writer’s View

This is a bold and potentially shrewd piece of business from Blackpool. Fraser Horsfall has been one of League One’s most reliable centre-backs over the last two seasons, and to lure him from a direct rival who finished higher in the table signals real ambition from Steve Bruce.

For Stockport, it’s a setback—but perhaps a calculated one, with other options reportedly in the pipeline. As for Horsfall, he’s backing Blackpool to go one step further than County next season. Only time will tell if that proves to be the right gamble.
